Does MotoGP need rule changes?


When the 2009 MotoGP World Championship 'restarts' after the summer break at Brno on August 14-16, a major new rule change will come into effect.

For the final seven rounds of the season, each rider will be restricted to five engine changes, with any additional changes punishable by a ten point penalty.

The start of the 2010 season will then see a further fundamental rule change with the decision to ban rookies from riding for a factory team (except Suzuki, which has no satellite team).

The engine rule has been brought in to try and reduce running and maintenance costs, while the rookie amendment is designed to specifically help the satellite teams.

The financial crisis has reduced the MotoGP field to just 17 full time riders, only eight of which ride for factory teams (Fiat Yamaha, Ducati Marlboro, Repsol Honda and Rizla Suzuki). A non-factory rider hasn't won a MotoGP race since the last year of 990cc racing, in 2006.

However, five different riders have won a race from the ten rounds held so far this year, and six races have been won by less than 1.5sec, so are such rule changes needed at all?
