125: Simon wins, Smith falls
19 July 2009
Julian Simon took his second victory of the season with a runaway performance in Sunday's 125cc German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring, while team-mate and title rival Bradley Smith crashed out.
Smith had snatched the lead from pole sitter Simon despite running wide into turn one, but fell soon after and rejoined in 32nd place. The Englishman, who had finished every previous race in the top ten, then crashed out for good after tangling with another rider on lap 4 of 27.
Simon soon pulled away from his nearest rivals to win by a huge 9.415sec over another Aspar Aprilia team-mate, Sergio Gadea, and extend his championship lead from 5.5 points over Smith to 25 over Gadea heading into next weekend at Donington Park, Smith's home round.
Sunday's race marked the 16th time this season that a Spaniard had started from pole, across all three classes, but the first time that a Spaniard had won from pole this year.
Nicolas Terol dropped away from Gadea from the midway point onwards and was later caught and passed by Joan Olive and Marc Marquez.
Marquez snatched third from Olive at the start of the last lap, but Olive retook the position and the pair then collided as they headed for the final turn.
Olive negotiated the corner to claim third, but Marquez suffered a huge highside, apparently due to front brake lever damage sustained moments earlier.
Local stars Jonas Folger and Stefan Bradl both crashed out.
After two days of rain interrupted practice and qualifying, the race took place in dry but increasingly overcast conditions.Race results - Sachsenring:
