125: Terol wins Qatar opener
11 April 2010
Nicolas Terol has won the season-opening 125cc Qatar Grand Prix, on his debut for the Bancaja Aspar Aprilia team.
A seven-rider lead group containing Terol battled for victory throughout the 18 laps, with Terol making his victory move with three laps to go - when the Spaniard pumped out fastest race laps to break his pursuers.
Terol went on to claim his third grand prix win by a comfortable 2.395sec, while second to fourth places were covered by just 0.445sec.
Pol Espargaro and Ajo Derbi's pole sitter Marc Marquez made contact in the closing stages as they disputed second, but it was Espargaro's Tuenti Derbi team-mate Efren Vasquez who got the better of them both for his first grand prix podium.
The top non-Spaniard was German Sandro Cortese, who claimed fifth despite an earlier collision with Randy Krummenacher, which left the Swiss rider without a front fender. Krummenacher stayed upright for sixth at the flag.
Terol's team-mate and 2009 title runner-up Bradley Smith, who has battled a lack of engine performance all weekend, finished in eighth position.
Sunday's win was the 275th for Aprilia, equalling the number of grand prix wins by MV AgustaRace results - Qatar:
