125: Two in a row for Espargaro
23 May 2010
Pol Espargaro has taken his second 125cc grand prix victory in a row after once again beating title leader Nicolas Terol for victory at Le Mans.
Starting from his first ever grand prix pole, Terol blasted away to an almost one-second lead by the end of the first lap, with only Espargaro able to go with him.
By the halfway stage of the 24 laps the pair were six seconds clear of the fight for third, headed by Terol's Aspar Aprilia team-mate Bradley Smith, with Espargaro then taking the lead for the first time into the first chicane with nine laps to go.
Terol had made an embarrassing mistake by waving Espargaro into the lead last time at Jerez, then was unable to stick with him, but this time he hit back as soon as he could - retaking the lead from the Tuenti Derbi rider on the next lap.
Espargaro had a second bite at the lead with six to go, once again into the first chicane, and once again Terol hung in behind him.
But a rash overtaking attempt by Terol on the penultimate lap gave Espargaro a 0.659sec advantage with one lap to go, and effectively handed victory to Pol - younger brother of MotoGP rider Aleix.
Terol, who began the race seven points ahead of Espargaro, is now only two points in front.
Behind the leaders, Smith absorbed constant pressure from the likes of Efren Vasquez, Marc Marquez (who dislocated his shoulder at Jerez) and Sandro Cortese, but the Englishman was thrown out of the seat on the last lap - allowing Marquez past.
Smith made a lunge to retake the place through the final Esses, bumping Marquez in the process, but the Spaniard held firm on the outside and as the riders threaded their way into the final right-hand turn it was Smith who lost a position as Vasquez dived for the inside, forcing the #38 to lift.
