Moto2: Cluzel takes debut win at Silverstone

20 June 2010

Jules Cluzel has taken his first ever grand prix victory after a last-lap triumph in the British Moto2 race at Silverstone.

The Frenchman, who had crashed out of the last two races, had joined Forward Racing (Suter) team-mate and pole sitter Simone Corti, plus Aspar's Julian Simon (Suter) in breaking away at the front of the field after seven laps.

But the trio were then caught by Swiss star Thomas Luthi and home hero Scott Redding - Luthi then moving quickly through the group to snatch the lead with three of the 18 laps remaining.

When Corti subsequently crashed out at Vale on the penultimate lap, Interwetten Moriwaki rider Luthi gained a few bikelengths and looked set to claim his first grand prix win since 2006.

But Vale - where Hiroshi Aoyama and Dani Pedrosa crashed in MotoGP warm-up - once again proved decisive, as Luthi outbraked himself slightly, allowing Cluzel to dive for the lead.

Cluzel, who made his GP debut in 2005, held on to win by 0.057sec.

Simon claimed his second podium of the season with third, while Redding - 17th on lap one - finished off the British Grand Prix podium for the first time in his career, having won the 125cc class in 2008 and finished third in 2009, but fourth still marked his best Moto2 result for Marc VDS (Suter) team.

Title leader Toni Elias (Gresini Moriwaki) salvaged tenth after struggling all weekend and continues to lead the standings (by a reduced 15 points) after nearest rival Shoya Tomizawa (Technomag-Cip Suter) claimed sixth at Silverstone.

The revised raceday format means that MotoGP is next, followed by 125.
