125: Marquez claims mature Misano win

5 September 2010

Marc Marquez kept his head to claim his sixth win of the season at Misano on Sunday - and regained some breathing room at the top of the 125cc World Championship standings.

The three title contenders - Marquez, Nico Terol and Pol Espargaro - were nose-to-tail up front throughout the middle stages, but Espargaro couldn't maintain the pace and dropped back into the clutches of the leading trio's team-mates Vasquez (Tuenti), Cortese (Ajo) and Smith (Aspar).

Terol then waved Marquez into the lead - a mistake he had made earlier in the year - and was once again made to regret the tactic as the Red Bull Ajo Derbi rider punched out a series of fastest laps to drag a one-second lead over the Aspar Aprilia rider with four laps to go.

Marquez went on to win by 2.185sec over Terol, with Vasquez claiming the final podium position after just holding off pole sitter Smith and Cortese - while Espargaro sunk to the back of the pack in sixth.

Marquez, Terol and Espargaro began the race covered by just five points at the top of the standings.

They now head for the new Aragon event on September 19 with Marquez nine points clear of Terol and 20 in front of Espargaro.

Race results - Misano:
