Moto2: Iannone storms to victory at Aragon
19 September 2010
Andrea Iannone has taken his third win of the season in the first ever Moto2 event at Aragon.
Pole sitter Iannone held the lead into turn one then romped away from the field to take the chequered flag 6.203sec ahead of his nearest rival, but his lead had reached ten seconds.
Iannone rode the slow down lap with a big flag bearing the #48 of Shoya Tomizawa, who died at the previous Misano round. A minute's silence for Tomizawa was held earlier today.
Aspar Suter's Julian Simon claimed second position after battling Iannone's Fimmco Speed Up team-mate Gabor Talmacsi right to the finish.
It was the first ever Moto2 podium for former 125cc world champion Talmacsi, and at the event which replaced the abandoned Hungarian round.
Title leader Toni Elias, who had qualified just twelfth after a crash in qualifying, was only 14th at the end of lap one. The Spaniard, winner of the previous four races, then got into his stride and charged all the way up to fourth place, having just run out of laps to catch Talmacsi and the podium.
Nevertheless, Elias' comeback means his previous 83 point lead over nearest rival Simon has only been reduced to 76 points with five rounds to go. Iannone is just four points from Simon in third.
Five riders fell in a turn one pile-up - Fonsi Nieto, Mattia Pasini, Yonny Hernandez, Alex Baldolini and Ricard Cardus - while Spanish-based Scot Kev Coghlan, who had qualified 13th on his second Moto2 wild-card appearance, was forced to start from pit lane after a technical problem, then retired at the end of the first lap.Race results - Aragon:
