Moto2: de Angelis takes first win at Phillip Island
17 October 2010
Alex de Angelis turned his first Moto2 pole position into his first 600cc victory at Phillip Island on Sunday - marking only his second ever grand prix win and first since 2006.
The former MotoGP rider - injured early in the season and later forced to switch teams after a brief return to the premier-class - dropped to fourth on lap one, but soon reeled in race leaders Scott Redding and Andrea Iannone.
The trio broke clear of the field by the halfway stage of the 25 laps, by which time de Angelis was leading. The Sammarinese then began to edge away from his pursuers thereafter.
de Angelis, who narrowly lost out on victory at Sepang last Sunday, went on to claim the first win for JiR and its MotoBI chassis by 2.172sec from Marc VDS rider Redding.
de Angelis dedicated his win to Shoya Tomizawa, who died in an accident involving de Angelis and Redding at Misano.
Triple Moto2 race winner Iannone was just under one-second from the young Englishman in third.
Julian Simon rose from eighth on lap one to fourth at the flag and now holds second in the championship by just two points from Iannone, with two rounds to go. Stefan Bradl was a fraction behind Simon in fifth.
Simon's Aspar Suter team-mate Mike di Meglio fought for the lead in the early stages on his way to a Moto2 best of sixth place.
New world champion Toni Elias, who had qualified just ninth after technical troubles, spent much of the race in the midst of a huge battle for seventh. The Gresini Moriwaki rider won that battle by just 0.104sec.
Sepang winner Roby Rolfo finished just 26th - such is the unpredictable competition in Moto2.
Local wild-card Wayne Maxwell, second in warm-up, was knocked off on lap one - and then disqualified for taking his frustration out on Hector Faubel in the gravel trap.Race results - Phillip Island:
