Moto2: Bradl takes Silverstone win, Smith second
12 June 2011
Moto2 World Championship leader Stefan Bradl took his fourth win of the season in a soaking wet British Grand Prix at Silverstone, which also saw the first Moto2 podiums for class rookies Bradley Smith and Michele Pirro.
As so often this year, the secret to Bradl's success was to set a consistently high pace, then stay on two-wheels whilst his nearest rivals faltered.
The German rose from third to first at turn one, before a moment towards the end of the lap put home star Scott Redding into a popular lead.
Bradl re-passed the Briton on lap 4 of 22, lost the lead soon after to a charging Mattia Pasini, but was put back in front when the Italian crashed out on lap 8.
Bradl then built a safe lead over nearest rival Kenan Sofuoglu, who handed second place to Smith when he fell on lap 12.
Smith had qualified just 28th on the grid after electrical problems in qualifying and rode a remarkable race in front of his home fans.
The Tech 3 rider was up to 13th by the end of lap one and continued to carve his way through the field, passing countryman Redding for third just before the midway mark.
Sofuoglu's error also put fellow former World Supersport rider Pirro into third place for the Gresini Moriwaki team.
Starting from his first Moto2 pole, Marc Marquez had seen his bike destroyed when it careered into the pit wall after a highside in morning warm-up.
The reigning 125cc world champion and race-winning rookie made a cautious start to the race, then fell as he began to raise his pace at the halfway stage.
Bradl has now extended his title lead to a huge 62 points, over Simone Corsi, after just six races.Race results - Silverstone:
