Moto2: Marquez takes crucial Misano win
4 September 2011
Marc Marquez has moved to within one race victory of Moto2 title leader Stefan Bradl, after winning an exciting San Marino Grand Prix at Misano.
Both title rivals suffered scares early on, Bradl dropping from first to third after a near highside on the opening lap, with Marquez then losing second place after a near lowside.
That left Scott Redding up front from Bradl, Andrea Iannone and Marquez.
By the closing stages, the three 2011 race winners had all passed Redding, with Marquez taking the lead from Iannone with six laps to go.
Bradl, who had dropped from first to fourth after nearly clipping Iannone, struggled to pass the Italian and the contest between them allowed Marquez to pull one-second clear by the start of the final lap.
The Viessmann Kiefer rider made small gains on the reigning 125cc world champion, but couldn't prevent Marquez claiming his sixth victory of the season.
Repsol Suter star Marquez has now beaten Bradl in the last six rounds and has closed to within 23 points of the title lead, with five rounds still to go.
Speed Master Suter's Iannone claimed his fourth podium of the season, just 0.094sec behind Bradl, to strengthen his third place in the standings.
Home Sammarinese rider Alex de Angelis (MotoBI) put on late charge to reach fourth, less than a second from the podium, with Marc VDS Suter rider Redding holding off fellow Briton Bradley Smith (tech 3) for fifth in the closing laps.
Sunday's race marked the first anniversary of Shoya Tomizawa's fatal accident, which involved Redding and de Angelis.
