Moto3: Vinales victory to reclaim title lead
17 June 2012
Maverick Vinales, who became the first repeat Moto3 winner at the previous Catalunya round, made it two in a row with a hard fought victory at Silverstone on Sunday.
In doing so, the Blusens FTR-Honda star retook the championship lead by two-points from Sandro Cortese, who lost second place to Luis Salom at the very final turn.
Vinales and Salom led a swarm of riders disputing the lead for first half of the 17 laps, while Cortese worked his way forwards through the pack.
The trio had shaken-off their pursuers heading into the closing stages, with Salom - gunning for his first victory - leading Vinales and Cortese as the last lap began under bright and sunny conditions at the British circuit.
Vinales made his winning pass on Salom into the fast first turn, with Cortese demoting Salom to third under braking into Brooklands soon after. Critically for Cortese's victory hopes, Salom then made several attempts to re-pass the Red Bull KTM rider, allowing Vinales to edge away.
Salom's persistence paid off when he made a brave pass on the brakes into the final chicane, handing the Spaniard second place for Kalex-KTM by 0.090s and costing Cortese the title lead.
Caretta's Alexis Masbou led sixth riders covered by one-second to claim fourth place at the flag, with Le Mans winner Louis Rossi crashing out of the same hectic battle at the final turn.
Best of the British riders was Cortese's team-mate Danny Kent, just behind Efren Vasquez in sixth place, while Jerez winner Romano Fenati took seventh.
KTM riders Arthur Sissis and Zulfahmi Khairuddin competed the surviving members of the second group, with Miguel Oliveira a lonely tenth for the Estrella Galicia 0,0 team.
