By Lisa LewisMoto2 title leader Marc Marquez repeated his 2011 Assen victory after catching and passing Andrea Iannone in a race that saw his nearest championship rivals fail to finish.
Iannone, who himself won the Assen Moto2 race in 2010, had pulled away up-front after some hectic opening laps for the Speed Master team.
Marquez, who had the title chase pressure removed early on after Thomas Luthi and Pol Espargaro both crashed out, worked his CatalunyaCaixa Repsol Suter machine hard to try to catch Iannone, the pair then swapping positions when he finally caught up with three laps to go.
Marquez commented that the "last lap was so tight with Andrea" and that he now needs to focus on next weekend's race.
Scott Redding finished in third, taking his first ever back-to-back podium finishes for the Marc VDS team and Kalex.
He said in parc ferme that he was not expecting to do so well from a seventh position start, stating it had "been amazing" and adding "I'm really pleased with how the whole weekend's gone and thank you to the team".
Spaniard Tito Rabat finished his 100th Grand Prix for the Pons HP 40 Tuenti team in an impressive fourth position.
Alex De Angelis raced hard and finished fifth for Forward Racing (Suter) while Bradley Smith manoeuvred his Tech3 Mistral into sixth.
Brief early leader Dominique Aegerter translated his best qualifying since Estoril last year into a seventh position finish for the Technomag-CIP team and Suter.
Johann Zarco was Eighth for JIR, with
Toni Elias in ninth for Mapfre Aspar (Suter) and Marc VDS rider
Mika Kallio completed the top ten.
Swiss racer Luthi's race ended after a few turns when he tangled with Ratthapark Wilairot. Espargaro then took the pressure off title rival Marquez completely by crashing his Pons HP 40 Tuenti shortly after, while leading the race.
Alexander Lundh, Max Neukirchner, Axel Pons, Simone Corsi, and Damian Cudlin all also failed to go the distance.
British rider Gino Rea finished 22nd for Federal Oil Gresini (Suter).
Moto2 continues next weekend when the championship moves on to Germany for round eight.
