Moto2: Espargaro wins in Aragon, Redding third

Pol Espargaro snatched victory for Pons 40 HP Tuenti in a tight Moto2 race at Aragon, marking his third victory of the season and his second at the Motorland circuit after winning the 125cc GP in 2010.

Kalex rider Espargaro made the most of a thrilling battle for second between the likes of Marc Marquez, Scott Redding and Andrea Iannone to pull a 1.44 sec winning margin, cutting Marquez's championship lead to 48 points in the process.

It is Espargaro's first victory since Silverstone.

CatalunyaCaixa Repsol Suter rider Marquez turned around his worst qualifying of 2012 hitting the front from seventh with 15 laps to go, he was on the limit trying to keep Iannone at bay and was eventually passed with seven laps remaining by the Italian and then by Espargaro, who went on to win the race.

Scott Redding, who is still in recovery after a carpal tunnel operation took the final podium spot for Marc VDS, the British Kalex rider lurked all race and decided to “fight with the pain” using it as motivation to put a strong move on Andrea Iannone in the closing corners in an impressive race performance.

Speed Up rider Iannone had to settle for fourth after being in a podium position for most of the race distance, while Tech3's Bradley Smith put in an improved performance to race his way up to fifth across the line. JIR's Zarco was sixth.

Pole man Simone Corsi stayed in contention for Ioda in the early stages and was the front of the next pack of riders to finish in seventh, Jordi Torres converted his best ever qualifying into a solid eighth for Aspar. Claudio Corti finished ninth for Italtrans.

Improvements received by the QMMF team from Speed Up saw Ant West finish an impressive tenth, his third points finish of the season, the first coming in France with the old Moriwaki chassis in the wet, the other a 14th place finish in Indianapolis.

Tom Luthi went for damage limitation after starting 19th, moving the Interwetten-Paddock Suter to 11th by the end of the race. Espargaro's team mate Tito Rabat crossed the line in 12th, a second ahead of Nico Terol's Mapfre Aspar in 13th.

Mike Di Meglio aimed to make the most of his stand-in time with the Kiefer team finishing 14th from an 17th place start,while Dominique Aegerter took the final points spot on his birthday for the Technomag CIP team in 15th.

Mika Kallio lost his record as the only rider to score points at every race finishing 16th for Marc VDS.

Gino Rea who had a strong showing in the wet conditions of practice finished 22nd for Federal Oil Gresini.

Well, Marquez is very talented and extremely fast but he definitely had an advantage on the straights over everyone and even so he didn't win the race. Which only gives more credit to Pol Esparagaro's victory. I consider MM the best rider of the class but Pol's impresses me more every race and he is easily the second best of the lot, and pretty close to MM...
