Talmacsi wins after last turn 125cc carnage

5 June 2005

Race day at the Italian Grand Prix got off to a dramatic start with the 125cc race, which was decided in the final corner when race leader Mika Kallio highsided his KTM and was then hit by Héctor Faubel, who also went tumbling into the gravel trap.

Whilst both riders miraculously escaped without serious injury, their loss was Gabor Talmacsi's gain, the Hungarian KTM rider taking his maiden victory after passing Thomas Lüthi into the final corner.

"A very nice feeling to win my first grand prix but I'm a little bit lucky because Mika crashed while leading, right in front of me in the final corner," said Gabor. "Just before that I had made a very good overtaking move on Luthi in the final turn."

Whilst Joan Olivé pipped Mattia Pasini at the line for third place, the biggest smile came from Lüthi, who now leads the championship by eight points from KTM's Kallio.
