125: Bautista pegs Kallio in Brno
20 August 2006
Championship leader Alvaro Bautista scored his fifth 125cc win of the season to further enhance his points advantage as he out duelled Mika Kallio on the final lap of the Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno.
The Spanish Aprilia rider claimed the lead for good on lap six of 19 after several early exchanges with Kallio's KTM, the Derbi of home crowd favourite Lukas Pesek and the second Aspar Aprilia of Mattia Pasini.
After initially breaking up the five bike bunch at the head of the field Bautista seemed to have a comfortable advantage as the race entered its second half only for Kallio to chip away at his lead tenth after tenth.
A superb penultimate lap from the Finn brought him right onto Bautista's tail as they entered the final tour and as Bautista went to turn in to the final corner he found Kallio's orange and black machine right on the apex.
Kallio led for just a few yards as Bautista calmly tucked back underneath the KTM for the run to the chequered flag, taking the win by two hundredths of a second.
Behind the top two Pesek clung to third place bravely right until the final lap when Hungarian rider Gabor Talmacsi muscled his way through on the best of the under performing Honda's. Talmacsi would go on to take third with Pesek crashing on the final corner as he tried in vain to retake third.
Sergio Gadea moved through the Pesek accident to pass Pasini and take fourth place with reigning champion Thomas Luthi also scrambling through to complete the top five.
Pasini took sixth place, a spot occupied by Hector Faubel until the last lap until he also crashed with Nicholas Terol, Juan Olive, Pablo Nieto and Fabrizio Lai completing the top ten.125cc Race Result – Brno
