250: Lorenzo seals the deal
20 August 2006
Jorge Lorenzo completed a weekend of domination with victory in the 250cc Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno, extending his lead in the championship in the process.
After blitzing the rest of the field in both qualifying sessions a relatively poor start from pole position meant the Spaniard crossed the stripe on lap one in fourth place but although his closest rivals made him work for it during the opening half of the 20-lap race, Lorenzo seemed to shift gears as the race reached three quarter distance.
A four bike scrap for the lead became a trio when Alex De Angelis fell at the opening corner on lap five, one lap after he and Lorenzo exchanged the lead no less than five times on one tour of the 5.4-km Brno circuit.
De Angelis' exit left Andrea Dovizioso and the KTM of Hiroshi Aoyama as Lorenzo's nearest competition with the Japanese rider briefly stealing a march on the Fortuna Aprilia man to lead several laps.
But Lorenzo seemed to tire of following someone else and slipped back into the lead just before the lap 15 mark and proceeded to pull away with ease.
By the end of the race Lorenzo had a lead of more than two and a half seconds over Aoyama and Dovizioso, who swapped places on the final corner following a perfectly executed lunge by the Italian rider. Dovi's late move minimises the damage done to his title hopes and he now trails Lorenzo by seven markers.
Veteran Roberto Locatelli briefly joined the lead bunch but fell back for a lonely run to fourth place while Lorenzo's teammate Hector Barbera came out on top of a lengthy duel with Shuhei Aoyama to take fifth.
Columbian Martin Cardenas enjoyed a career best run to seventh place ahead of leading privateer Sylvain Guintoli while Dan Linfoot's day came to an early end when he crashed out on lap 9.250cc Race Result – Brno
