125: Koyama takes debut win
10 June 2007
Japan's Tommy Koyama overcame an Aspar Aprilia qualifying 1-2-3 to take his first victory in Sunday's 125cc Catalan Grand Prix - as two KTMs finished in the top three.
A six-man victory fight was reduced to four when Derbi's former world championship leader Lukas Pesek hit the back of Hector Faubel with four laps to go, bringing them both down and leaving the two remaining Aspar Aprilias of Sergio Gadea and Gabor Talmacsi battling the KTMs of Koyama and young team-mate Randy Krummenacher - riding by far the best race of his first full GP season.
As the last lap began Koyama was leading a KTM one-two, but home hero Gadea pounced ahead of them both into turn one. Koyama then made his victory pass by squeezing inside at the end of the back straight, a move which forced Gadea wide and allowed Talmacsi and Krummenacher to fill the two remaining podium places. Koyama's previous best finish was a second place in the 2005 Australian Grand Prix, while Krummenacher's former best was a 13th! Meanwhile, former KTM rider Talmacsi has retaken the points lead.
Meanwhile, Mattia Pasini's horrific 2007 luck struck yet again as the Italian's factory Aprilia let him down for the fifth time in seven races - on this occasion spitting the four-times grand prix winner off at turn one as he began to make his way through the lead group in the early stages of the race.
Pasini has shown admirable patience in the past, but being flung down the road proved a step too far and the 21-year-old gave his jinxed machine a few good kicks as it lay in the gravel trap. Mattia then regained his composure... before kicking it a few more times. Few could blame him.
