Marc Marquez took a thrilling victory in the San Marino round of the Moto2 championship from the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, in a shortened 14 lap race after a red flag ended the original start due to oil spilled on the track from Gino Rea's smoking Gresini bike.

Championship leader Marc Marquez fought rival Pol Espargaro all the way to the line, winning by just 0.183 and extending his lead in the World Championship standings to 53 points.

This is the Spaniard's seventh win of the season and third consecutive victory, it also means Marquez takes his third win in a row at Misano, having won the Moto2 race last year and the 125cc grand prix in 2010.

Pol Espargaro came off second best from the battle to the line, the lead changing hands five times on the final lap, but Espargaro found Marquez and his bike, sometimes his dangling leg, blocking his Pons 40 HP Tuenti when it mattered most.

After taking pole on the new grid defined by the race positions at lap three Andrea Iannone, sporting a loud 'Step Up 4' film livery, lead for most of the race but couldn't keep pace as his tyres degraded over the closing laps, finishing third for Speed Master.

Mika Kallio, remains the only rider to score points at every race this season, maintaining his record with a fourth place finish for Marc VDS.

Tito Rabat initially held back Marquez at the front helping his Pons team mate Espargaro and remained in the chasing pack eventually finishing fifth. Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter finished sixth for Technomag-CIP, Tomizawa's team at the time of his fateful crash.

Marc VDS rider Scott Redding made some late manoeuvres to move up the order only to be pushed back to seventh in the closing stages. His fellow Brit Bradley Smith was next across the line in eighth for Tech3.Smith's team mate Simeon failed to finish.

Tom Luthi was ninth for Interwetten-Paddock with Johann Zarco next across the stripe in tenth for JIR. Japanese rider Takaaki Nakagami finished eleventh for Italtrans.
