Jerez Moto3: Vinales victorious in crash filled race

Maverick Vinales wins the Moto3 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, his first victory of the season.

Team Calvo rider Maverick Vinales won the Moto3 Spanish Grand Prix, after a red-flag caused by an accident for CIP rider Alan Techer.

Vinales now leads the world championship standings by four points from Luis Salom after leading lap 15, where the race was counted back to as the last complete lap.

It is Vinales' best result at Jerez after failing to finish in 2011 and finishing sixth in 2012 after running wide on the second lap.

Salom had to settle for a frustrating second as he was sat behind his fellow Spaniard waiting for the right moment to make his move aboard his Red Bull KTM Ajo, when the race was cut short.

Jonas Folger was third for Mapfre Aspar with his first podium of the season he is also the first non-Spanish rider to make the rostrum this year.

KTM once again dominate with all three of the top riders aboard a KTM or Kalex KTM.

Initial reports said Techer was 'conscious' and currently undergoing treatment in the medical centre.

Alex Rins lost out in the championship race as he had been in the leading group with Vinales, Salom and Folger until he lost the front of his Estrella Galicia KTM with thirteen laps to go, allowing the two remaining Spaniards to open a gap on Folger.

Brad Binder benefited from a huge gap after both Mahindra's Miguel Oliveira and Caretta rider Jack Miller crashed behind him, leaving him clear for fourth and the top finishing Honda.

The battle for fifth was won by Redox RW Racings Jakub Kornfeil despite a lack of track time as he only joined the paddock on Saturday after sitting exams in the Czech Republic.

Sixth was awarded to Avant Tecno's Niklas Ajo while Red Bull's Zulfahmi Khairuddin had moved into seventh at the race end.

Completing the top ten were Mahindra's Efren Vazquez, San Carlo Team Italia rider Romano Fenati and Ongetta Rivacold's Alexis Masbou.

According to article 1.25.4 of the regulations: "If the results calculated show that two-thirds of the original race distance rounded down to the nearest whole number of laps have been completed by the leader of the race and by all other riders on the same lap as the leader, then: - For the Moto3 and Moto2 classes, the race will be deemed to have been completed and full Championship points will be awarded." 2 thirds of 23 are 15,333333... but this is rounded down to 15 so the distance needed was reached.
