Luis Salom turned up the heat at just the right time to take his third Moto3 win of the season, in front of his home fans at Catalunya.
The podium places looked to be between Alex Rins, Salom and Maverick Vinales as they broke away from the leading group with three laps to go.
Vinales had slowed the pace to save tyres only for Salom to take to the front and attempt to break up the group, dropping Efren Vazquez in the process, with Alex Marquez also struggling to hold on after the pace injection.
Salom then ran a tactically perfect final two laps, pulling away from his two fellow countrymen for the win. Salom also takes the lead in the world championship by five points with a total of 127, swapping places with rival Vinales, who have both been on the podium at every round.
Estrella Galicia rider Rins took second clear of Vinales in third with the Team Calvo rider taking part in a drumming celebration to mark his podium after his problems in qualifying.
The top four positions were all filled by KTM's with Alex Marquez next across the stripe, giving Estrella Galicia two riders in the top four.
The all Spanish top five was completed by Efren Vazquez. On his first full race weekend since breaking his collarbone in Le Mans Vazquez gave everything the Mahindra had and was competitive for most of the race distance before settling for position.
Fellow Mahindra rider Miguel Oliveira was next to finish in sixth after winning his battle with Caretta Technology-RTG rider Jack Miller, who in seventh was the best placed Honda rider.
The battle for eighth covered the remaining points places, with the fierce fight for position being won by the experienced Alexis Masbou for Ongetta Rivacold, just ahead of Red Bull rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin in ninth and his team-mate Arthur Sissis who completed the top ten.
