Esteve 'Tito' Rabat sliced through the field to win Sunday's Moto2 Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The closing laps saw the action hit a peak with the battle for the front being won by Tuenti HP 40 rider Rabat ahead of a fading Takaaki Nakagami, while the fight for the championship raged behind between Scott Redding and Pol Espargaro.

Rabat stormed through the pack after struggling to pass early rival Dominique Aegerter, putting his second win of the season after his maiden win in Jerez down to had work and patience. As he passed Nakagami to take and then keep the lead the main title rivals were also swapping position behind him.

Indianapolis was also the scene of Rabat's first Moto2 podium back in 2011.

Italtrans rider Nakagami dominated the body of the race with consistent lapping only to be reeled in as his tyres began to wear. It is the Japanese riders best result to date. He complained of serious chatter in the closing laps.

The first major move by a leading rider was made by Espargaro, who passed Redding with 14 laps remaining, Redding stuck with his own pace and held firm behind his Spanish rival.

The Marc VDS man went on to win their battle, completing his objective of beating his main competition for the title and complete an all Kalex top three.

The Briton now leads the championship by 26 points from Tuenti HP 40 rider Espargaro with Rabat's win putting him third, 46 points adrift.

It means that even if he fails to score points in Brno next weekend Redding will arrive at his home round still holding the championship lead.

Technomag carXpert rider Aegerter held on to fifth with one final part to play in the drama as he had contact briefly with Espargaro when he ended up involved in their battle. The Swiss rider was also the top Suter finisher.

After a strong start to his weekend NGM Moblie Racing rider Simone Corsi crossed the line in sixth. He was the best placed of the Speed Up riders.

Redding's Marc VDS team-mate Mika Kallio finished in seventh ahead of Came Iodaproject rider Johann Zarco in eighth.
