San Marino Moto3: Masterful Rins snatches victory from Vinales

Alex Rins took a hard fought victory in the Moto3 San Marino Grand Prix at Misano.
By Lisa Lewis

The weather held for the San Marino Moto3 Grand Prix at Misano, where Alex Rins and Maverick Vinales broke away at the front, with the duo taking their fight to the wire.

After entertaining the fans with exciting racing, blocking and passing, Rins just held off his fellow countryman for the win - his fourth win of the season, a tally only bettered by championship leader Luis Salom.

Vinales, who has not won since the Le Mans round, picked up his eleventh podium of the season - only missing out at Silverstone - the Team Calvo man having never previously made the rostrum at Misano.

The all-Spanish and all-KTM podium has become the norm in Moto3, and this time it meant the gap to Luis Salom was cut to 19 points by Vinales, and just 21 points to Rins in his late run at the title.

Rins' Estrella Galicia team-mate Alex Marquez sailed past Salom and then took on the mission of trying to catch the leading pair, eventually having to settle for a comfortable third.

Red Bull KTM rider Salom looked to have reached his limit and could not break with Marquez, nor could he comfortably settle for fourth with a group of five all tussling for position. He exercised as much damage limitation as possible taking a hard fought fourth place.

Fifth saw the first Honda cross the line, piloted by Jack Miller. It was the Caretta Technology-RTG riders best result so far this season, as was the case for Red Bull KTM rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin in sixth after deciding to make less changes to his bike over the weekend paid him dividends.

Mahindra's Miguel Oliveira fought his way to seventh using harder compound tyres ahead of Niccolo Antonelli. The Go & Fun Gresini rider was the highest placed of the Italian riders after coming off worst in the paint-swapping battle for fourth.

Philipp Oettl had his best finish of the season in ninth for Tec Interwetten Moto3 Racing, holding off a charging Romano Fenati who was fastest towards the end of the race and crossed the line in tenth.

Don't we bother to mention that Folger had a bad crash, was stretchered off and we got one brief statement about a leg injury and then total silence. Mr Ali G suggests "Is it coz he int Spanish?" For those interested he suffered a fracture to the left ankle and an injured shoulder.
