Takaaki Nakagami took his first Moto2 victory of the season at Silverstone on Sunday, less than a week after being announced as a MotoGP rider for 2018.

The Japanese made a good start from fourth on the grid to chase down Marc VDS championship leader Franco Morbidelli. Italtrans rider Mattia Pasini was also able to charge past his compatriot to take second, with Morbidelli completing the podium in third.

Team-mate Alex Marquez had taken the early lead but, after a brief battle with Morbidelli, fell at Turn 14. That left Morbidelli in control, until Nakagami caught and passed the Italian.

The Honda Team Asia rider was in turn chased down by Pasini, but held on to win by 0.724s.

By finishing one place ahead of Thomas Luthi, Morbidelli nudged his title lead up to 29-points over the Swiss rider.

Top rookie Francesco Bagnaia completed the top five for VR46, ahead of compatriot Simone Corsi (Speed Up Racing). Bagnaia's team-mate Stefano Manzi delivered his best Moto2 result to date with seventh, at a circuit where he impressed as a Moto3 rider last year.

KTM's Miguel Oliveira was only 0.061s behind, with team-mate Brad Binder and Kiefer Suter's Dominique Aegerter completing the top ten.

Rode amazing today, great win. He's had some bad luck this season has been taken out a few times. Good way to celebrate his motogp jump.
