Illiterate - Stoner had just set the fastest lap of the race, and according to timing ad just set the fastest sector 1 time when he crashed. Not the sign of someone backing off I would suggest.
Also, I don't recall Casey saying he was backing off? He said he changed his riding style as he had already had a couple of warnings from his front tyre. I think the idea of him backing off is an excuse some of his fans/armchair experts have come up with and Casey has just been quite honest about what happened. Fair play, being able to adapt to the bike/car is important if you want to stay at the front, he tried and made a mistake. Isn't the first and won't be the last guy to do it.
