The horsepower advantage that Ducati had appeared to be wiped out once the others used pneumatic valve control. Although most people think the main advantage of the mechanical desmo system is higher rpm. I beg to differ. My view is that the valve springs sapped too much horsepower. How much? Pull the plugs from your four and rotate the crank. Then do the same on your mates Ducati. Throw harmonics, float and bounce into the mix and you can see why pneumatics were needed to compete. As for all the debate on electronics I have seen statements from both sides of the fence but nothing to convince me that Ducati had some electronic wonder package.
