These stats confirm what we know. In the 800cc era you either click with the desmosedici from the world go, or youve got a lot of work ahead to turn things around. Stoner fast at the start, great next season. Hayden and Melandri slow at the start, average (hayden)/shocking (melandri) next season. Name one rider who started badly on the ductai and went on to take podiums or vice versa was top 6 on debut then went backwards? Rossi being Rossi he can certainly break the trend. But, unless it was his shoulder, don't underestimate the work he needs to do.
