I think we all want to know the answer to that question!
I don't think it was money. Spies wasn't going to make what Hopper made. Spies took the Yamaha WSBK ride and surely they didn't pay what he was making in AMA and I doubt if that sum was head and shoulders about what Suzuki GP would have paid. Money was an issue with the Suzuki WSBK team because they didn't have any and were looking for the factory to pay Spies. Spies didn't want to go to WSBK and only wanted to go to MotoGP so I doubt if he would have priced himself out of a seat.
From what I've read, Denning and Co just passed on Spies - for Loris and Chris V. Who both end up being releasing. The thought of having Bautista and Spies in the same team now has to cross Dennings mind from time to time. Short of bringing another title to Suzuki, I don't think Denning will ever live down not signing Spies.
