I was under the impression that the airbags being used were more to protect the neck-spine area rather than the shoulders as well. Mind you, now you've said that, and given the lack of injuries to Spies, Lorenzo and Simoncelli yesterday I take it that I'm mistaken. I imagine that the same airbag system could be used for the hip area to reduce pelvic damage. Trickier for arms and legs though.
