As far as Spies goes I wouldn't be too hard on him. He still needs to get his faith in the tires up early on but he doesn't have the advantage of prior data that JLo has and will take longer to get the bike dialed in.
He is improving and what I like is that he's a racer. He went for the positions, showed the speed in running down that pack and pushed them to the end. Brave pass on Rossi who had superior straight line speed. Couldn't do the same to the Honda's they get off the corner too well.
If I were to criticize it seems like he takes wider sweeping lines and invites riders of similar pace to go underneath and block pass. Then his rhythm is upset and they eek out an advantage. It looks like he could be a better defensive rider and maybe not lose those positions in the first place. he sure can close down on people once he gets comfy.
