I hate to sound like a pot of excuses but we have to agree that Rossi cannot ride the "Stoner styled" Ducati and needed a new direction. In 2012 they "truly" have that option because they have listen to what Rossi said, Burgess et al and they made a bike based on that input although there are some limitations on maintaining Ducati inspired breeding which may very well be the downfall. The new DUC should be close to what Rossi requested (if not totally) so if he cannot fight this year for podiums and even one single win...then even as a Rossi fan, I would say he failed to achieve on the Ducati. I still believe he has 1 or 2 titles in him just not necessarily with Ducati.
