For the Purist, 500cc Grand Prix 2 strokes were the stuff of legends. They had their time though. WSB was gaining serious viewership numbers in the 90's, why ? Coz they raced (1) Production Bikes you could buy &(2) 4 Strokes. Dorna claimed at the time that 500cc's reached their development peak. Bulldust. They lost their appeal, more and more fans were watching SBK.
The next 2-3 years are going to be interesting for Motogp. People had the same doubts in 2001 when the switch to 4 strokes was officially announced and look how that turned out.
In the end, Grand Prix racing will weather the storm it currently finds itself in and be better off because of it.
