The concept was already in place. Prior to CRT, an independent team could lease the same factory bikes from Honda and Yamaha to give them the same equipment as the mighty factories.
Effectively this was what Marco Simoncelli had last year. He was really the fourth factory Honda as Team Gresini leased the same bike Stoner, Pedrosa and Dovi used throughout the season.
All the current CRT teams could have the same Honda and Yamaha used by Stoner and Lorenzo if they wanted to....hiwever, the problem is the massive costs of leasing these machines. They are simply unafforable to many non-factory teams as they cost multi millions per machine. You could run two or three CRT machines, plus have some Engineers on the side, and left over change for travel expenses for the same cost of leasing a factory bike.
Many teams chose the CRT options as it makes more economic sense, plus also the realisation that even if they had the same machines, they're never going to beat Stoner an
