Don't be backward in going out in a slow group at first to get the feel of things. The ones I've been to don't let passing up the inside or outside in slow groups so that's one less thing for you to worry about. If it's too slow for you then you should be able to change up to a faster group. "Full race" sessions you have to expect the unexpected and the bloke going around the outside of you won't be expecting you to pick up your bike for the bloke going under you at the same time if your early on the brakes ...
I've also seen few guys throw their bikes down the road in the first session of the day, try not to be one of them
