I am not saying that the years where Americans did not compete in any series do not count. Those champions earned their titles and the respect that goes with it. But at the same time, I am not sure that you can deduce that American lack of participation was because they were not qualified or capable, as others have insinuated here.
I am well aware that riders from outside of Europe have contested individual races since the series was formed but are you aware that it was actually 1953 before a non-European fully contested for the championship and ran every event?
