I certainly don't think he meant pumping. You say that the word chatter transcends languages, but the word pump certainly does transcend english and german. It's more or less the same word. Bradl would not have had problems in the translation between the german and english for pumping. He may however had had problems with translating chatter since the word is totally different.
Any german readers out there who could clear this up?
