re: "Considering I'm relatively new to motorcycling, I just don't know the appeal of a two-stroke beyond the theoretical weight vs. power advantages, etc" sounds like you understand just fine. re: "I read recently that companies like OSSA are developing direct injection which may yet revive two stroke technology. If anyone knows anything about this, please enlighten us, it seems promising." they're late actually. nothing to develop. 2-stroke DI (albiet not for bike world beggars) has already long been commercialized and is in wide distribution by evinrude under bombardier/rotax. these are obviously a marine application so they are so clean as to even meet/exceed C.A.R.B. standards. the technology from what i understand is making it to their ski-doo snowmobiles also. again, another "emissions sensitive" environment.
