I believe you're right. I think for some time now there have been a lot of politics bubbling away in the background with a view to getting Valentino back on a factory Yamaha, and it's likely that the intrigues and schemes have had at least some effect on Spies' motivation. Not the whole reason he quit maybe, but certainly a contributing factor. I think in the long term Spies himself will confirm it.
