"Black or white" mentality is for kids. It's not just "the bike" nor is it solely "the rider" at fault here. This obviously was a combination which didn't work and feedbacked itself into submission: The rider wouldn't feel good on the bike and would go slower, so lose places and thus would ride with less of a motivation/spirit and so lose even more places, etc until at the deathbed's last breath just gave up completely.
Spirit is everything in racing. If anyone over here has ever even half-tried to go fast on a motorcycle around a track knows for a fact that high spirits can make for a lot of time difference, nomatter what level you are at.
