@ Hemmy You kind of missed my point that @Sliderules was saying back-to-back championships were not important, managing to win championships with a gap between them was. My point is Rossi has done both. You are right Rossi did not win a championship on a Ducati and may have swapped an earlier title for this, BUT neither did Stoner win back-to-back championships on arguably the best bike on the grid (Repsol Honda), which Rossi did manage (Yamaha). Similar to your question about Rossi, would Stoner and his fans have wished him to finish his career as back-to-back world champ? If you are going to apply an argument to one rider, please apply it to the other too.
