@numpty, Mercedes Benz used a desmo valve actuation system on their W196 Formula One car in the mid 1950s. It's not a Ducati invention. Ducati's specific method may be patented but there were several automotive manufacturers who used it before Ducati ever did. Delage, Mercedes and Maserati all used it before 1960.
