"I think the reason Lorenzo, Pedrosa, Stoner and now Rossi back on a Yamaha were and will be out front is because they are fantastic riders." Yes, they are. But the fact remains that if you took the factory Yam or Honda of any one of the guys you mention away, that with it goes any chance of wins or a WC. These bikes are a big, BIG advantage over anything else on the track. We can never say with absolute certainty that no-one else in the field couldn't win as they don't get the tools to have a fair shot against JL, DP, MM & VR. In special conditions a rider with a lesser bike may beat one or maybe 2 of these guys (maybe). But not them all.
