Ducati couldn't care who wins on their bike let alone that the dynamic duo of bike development leave them with a bike that anyone can win on by the end of their tenure. Their faces were red enough when people saw their development budget embarrass the japanese companies even before they realised they were worse off after two years! In the end he neither adapted the bike or adapted TO the bike and being prudent or scared is the same thing in bike racing whether you're racing to win OR being paid to win. There's no place for wiley old foxes (or young ones for that matter!) unless they're gonna give it their best shot.
