I think the question is, "Rossi has been compared to Stoner HOW?" Dave has a point. Before Rossi hopped on the Ducati, the comparisons were few & far between. That's not to suggest that comparisons weren't drawn, but the bulk of the comparisons were weighed (and are still currently weighed) upon Rossi's performance on the Ducati versus Stoner's. Some people weigh the ability to ride a Ducati "successfully" - key word - for better or for worse on the aforementioned ability. If we are to judge a rider based on that simple premise (Can he/she ride a Ducati to a win, or to a greater effect...a WC?), then it is highly likely that, aside from Stoner, there aren't any known riders who can accomplish that feat. If Lorenzo were to hop on a Ducati tomorrow and fail to achieve Stoner's results, will the same people who lambast Rossi...
