What amazes me is how so many people take stock in a one off lap. The best lap of a whole day, taken when they don't care about tire consumption, fuel consumption, or someone sticking wheel in when they make the slightest mistake. When the conditions are as good as they are going to get, the tires are at maximum, turn up the fuel and go for a quick lap. Those lap times aren't what they do in a race. BUT that being said they might be an indicator of qualifying.
Also real lap times are calculated using section by section data, carefully looking at data which we don't get to see.
