What is certain, in my eyes, is that MM is faster on worn tires than Dani. What's uncertain is what this is down to. Is it just the expression of MM's relative speed no matter what the tyre wear? Does it mean MM is just better on a worn tyre than Dani? Does it mean MM is arriving at the latter stages of the races with his rubber in better condition? Is MM achieving better speed through risks that accidents will knock out of him? Is it a combination of all these factors? I agree with you that MM's current lack of relative smoothness might be using more tire but I don't think it is on the scale you are intimating (but we're both just guestimating).
