If Yamaha do make a 3 cylinder R1, I expect it'll have a conventional firing interval with a 120 degree crank. A crossplane triple would require a lot of balancing to stop it shaking itself to bits. So much balancing that they'd be just as well sticking another cylinder on it and making an inline 4.
If they could get the organizers to allow an 1100cc triple in to the series, then it might be worth while building such a beast to use in competition. If not, there'd surely be no point in trying to race the 4 cylinder bikes with a 1000cc triple.
