As for your second. I think you find he doesn't use that excuse and thats why he still on the bike not giving up and giving it his all.
The fact is the weight does have to be taken in to account. Even you said it the small bike and rider minimum weight change has helped him a little.
Plus the weight issue has an affect on tire wear, traction out of slow corners and so on.
All i say roll on next year when this is not a problem.
