The problem with Rossi isn't his age, it isn't the bike, it isn't his crew, and it isn't his skill set... it goes back a couple of years. He mouthed off about Stoner, and signed up for Ducati. It was going to be unprecedented. A World Championship on a third manufacturer. No-one had ever done it before. It would prove he was the GOAT.
He got on Stoner's bike after it beat him at Valencia two days earlier. He was two (2) seconds a lap slower! Yes, really. He knew right then. 2 seconds a lap is an eternity for someone of Rossi or Stoner's caliber. It is massive. He whittled it down over the following months using every trick he knew.
Eventually, the reality hit home. Stoner is faster.
The psychological scar is so deep, he will probably never quite recover. Stoner probably couldn't care less. Rossi is still just as good a rider, but he no longer quite believes his own BS. It's just an act. He won't beat Marquez or JLO or Pedrosa much more.
