Casey Stoner, winner of the last two races and fastest in all track sessions at Valencia, crashed out on the warm-up lap and did not take the race start.

2009 World Superbike champion Ben Spies was making his Yamaha MotoGP debut as a wild-card this weekend, while Aleix Espargaro once again replaced the injured Niccolo Canepa at Pramac Ducati.
