Qatar MotoGP, Losail - Race Results

Race results from the 2014 Qatar MotoGP at Losail, round 1 of 18.
Marc Marquez won a thrilling MotoGP season-opener in Qatar after holding off a charging tenth-on-the-grid Valentino Rossi by just 0.259s.

Rossi and Marquez (who was using the harder rear tyre) exchanged the lead repeatedly in the closing stages, before a mistake free final lap from Marquez kept Rossi at bay. Dani Pedrosa completed the podium.

Jorge Lorenzo, winner in Qatar for the past two seasons, rocketed into the lead at turn one - then crashed out after losing the front of his Yamaha on entry to the penultimate corner.

14 laps later Stefan Bradl suffered the same fate while leading, leaving a front group of Rossi, Marquez, Pedrosa, Bradley Smith and Alvaro Bautista.

Smith and Bautista both fell, leaving Pedrosa to claim a safe third and helping Aleix Espargaro take a career best fourth place on the new Open class Forward Yamaha.

I'm astounded - where the hell did Rossi pull that performance from? He was nowhere all weekend! I was preparing to be disappointed, but this was like the good old days, like no time has past at all. After this, all those who've been saying he's past it can go crawl back under the pathetic little rocks they came from! The Doctor is back!

Yossarian: Do you always laugh out loud when riders fall off ?
No. I even grimaced at his crash, but it was his own fault, he was on a wider than usual line, and pushing hard on a cold tyre. He was asking for it. Frankly the race was better without him.
How can a race be better with less riders ?
